Pre-Imaging
The Pre-imaging department will help you in any way we can. We understand you need your job quickly and correctly. Follow our tips and save time and money on your project.
- Provide a hard copy (print out) or PDF for us to look at.
- If your job has a bleed, make sure to make the document larger so when we trim we are to the exact size needed. Your text should be at least 1/8 away from cut edge. When designing jobs for a copy machine, remember that copy machines have a 1/4 inch margin all around.
- Give us any fonts and images you have used. If you are using Pagemaker or Quark, utilize the programs function to collect all linked files. When giving us files, please only include the fonts and images you have used and not extra items. Do not change the names of your images after linking them.
- Please save imagery as CMYK colors, or if they are just gray images save them as grayscale, especially if you have multiple images in your document.
- Make sure you don’t have lines thinner than .25 pt.
- Check that you have used proper colors throughout the document, make sure black is 100% and not registration black, or auto colors.
- Use applications that are good for printing: Call us if you are using another program, just because you don’t have these programs, doesn't mean we won’t be able to help you.
We run most applications on both Windows and Macintosh environments.
Adobe InDesign
Adobe Illustrator
Adobe Photoshop
Adobe Pagemaker
Quark Xpress
Corel Draw
Macromedia Freehand - Microsoft Applications and WordPerfect can be problematic. We can work with these applications but there will likely be computer charges that will apply. We understand that most of campus have these applications but we will tell you why they are problematic. These types of applications use RGB colors, presses use CMYK colors, and it is not possible to convert the colors in these applications, so we have to bring them into other programs to get them to work properly, adding more time to complete the job. We also have noticed font variations in these programs, for example some basic fonts may be named differently than what we may have.
- Make sure your images are at least 300 dpi. Do not download images from the web, most likely they are low resolution, they may look fine on your screen because your screen is the same resolution as the image. Zoom in on the image and you will be able to determine if it is a good image or not. If you are not sure give us a call and we will help you. If you have already saved your image at a lower resolution you can not change it. Programs like Photoshop will let you type in a higher resolution but it doesn't really change.
- Do not use Photoshop to create all of your text. Utilize the program for imagery and do your text in a desktop publishing program.
- If you are using Photoshop and you want your job to be 2 colors, do not save the file as CMYK, please specify the 2 colors.
- Always make a copy of your document before sending it to us, do not give us your original files.
We have different ways of getting your job done faster that we would like our clients to try.
We can install our printer drivers on your computer that will allow you to make a postscript file. This would allow you to print to a file specifically for our devices. Then you can give us this file and all your fonts and imagery are locked into place and we do not have to have the original working files. With Microsoft products we would make a PDF of the postscript file and change the RGB colors to CMYK with software that allows us to do that.
Another great option is the creation of PDF’s on your end. There are a number of ways to create a PDF. Exporting a PDF from any program may work for a copy center environment, but for printing there a specific requirements. The best way to create a PDF is to buy Adobe Acrobat Professional, Acrobat Reader does not have these functions. Acrobat comes with an option called Distiller that can turn your postscript file into a good PDF. Acrobat 6.0 comes with a PDF printer that has the distiller function built in that you can utilize as a printer instead of making the postscript file. With Microsoft products we will still have to utilize our tools to change RGB to CMYK but that is not time consuming.
Adobe Acrobat Professional can be purchased at the University Bookstore or through Office of Software Licensing. When you buy Adobe Acrobat, please call us so that we can help you setup your settings.
The only thing you need to remember about giving us postscript files or PDF’s is that they are not easily editable, any major changes will need to be made on your end.
Please call us if you have any questions, that is why we are here, 581-6171.
